Does your child have a cavity or are you looking for advice on cavity prevention? Then look no further! Cavities are caused mainly by plaque which, is a bacteria that is colourless and like a sticky film that continuously forms on teeth. Cavities are also known as dental caries and it is an infection of bacterial state that causes the destruction of the hard tissues of the teeth such as enamel. To help prevent cavities or dental caries it is important for your child to visit the dentist at least every 6 months for a check up. Frequent visits to the dentist will minimize the formation of cavities and is one of the most important preventive measures to remember. There are also Do’s and Dont’s pertaining to the health of your child’s teeth between dental visits.

Do’s:

– Explain to your child that it is important for them to brush their teeth twice a day, once in the morning and before bed. This will stop bacteria eating away at your child’s teeth during the night.
-Flossing! This is important for when your child’s teeth have begun to fully develop and are set closely beside one another.
-Avoid continuous sipping behaviours such as your child drinking from a juice box.

Dont’s:

-Try to avoid giving your child a snack right before bed and if you do make sure that they brush their teeth
-Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle
-Try to limit drinks other than water to snack and meal times
-Do not give your child candy everyday
