Brush your teeth after each meal, or at least once in the morning and before bed Brush your teeth after each meal, or at least once in the morning and once before bed. Regular brushing will prevent food particles from getting stuck behind the wires and between brackets; leftover food and bacteria can cause cavities and other oral health problems. Without proper brushing, stains may develop around the brackets.
Be sure to floss after each meal as well. You need to floss between each tooth and in and around the brackets and wires of your braces. This will help to dislodge food particles, preventing cavities and tooth decay. Try floss picks or floss threaders; these specially designed flossers allow you to really get between brackets and wires for cleaner, healthier teeth.
Avoid Foods That Damage Braces
Sticky foods, candies, and gum can damage your braces. Also, don't crunch hard candies, ice, or other hard foods. All of these foods can break a wire or pull off a bracket, which will delay your treatment until the problem can be fixed. You may want to try only soft foods for the first few days after you get your braces to help ease any discomfort.
Don't skip any appointments with your orthodontist. Your orthodontist will examine your braces to be sure they are still in good shape, firmly attached, and in the right place. The orthodontist will gauge your progress and adjust the bands or wires as necessary to progress treatment. Don't forget your regular dental appointments and bi-annual cleanings as well.
